In the world of fly fishing, the Florida Keys is at the pinnacle of the sport. On any given day, one can thrown at Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, Redfish, Snook, Shark and Barracuda on the many flats of the Florida Keys. All respond positively to a well placed fly.
Whether you are a beginner or an expert, Captain Todd Ziels is the guide for you. He is a “top Notch” fly angler himself, who is also a “top notch” fly fishing guide. Captain Todd is at the cutting edge of new fly patterns and techniques to stay ahead of the curve as the sport evolves. He has the experience and drive having guided expert anglers to trophies in prestigious fly tournaments and yet the patience and teaching ability to having helped many anglers to their first catch on fly on the flats. Captain Todd takes pride in both. He ties all of his own flies and continuously forms new patterns to entice the trophy fish of the Florida Keys.
Captain Todd is an intense guide, never wanting failure, but you will never hear him yell or see him get mad at a client for a mistake while fishing. Captain Todd instead sees this as opportunity to teach constructively, to build that angler into a better fisherman. Nothing pleases the Captain as much as seeing a fish tricked by one of his many flies and patterns.
For anglers in pursuit of the permit on fly, the 2nd half of February through the middle of April is prime time on the flats of the Keys. From Marathon down through the lower back country and west of Key West is considered some of the best permit grounds in the world. Captain Todd loves the challenge of the permit, having helped many anglers to their first ever permit on fly.
Tarpon season begins in March with warm water, peaking in May through June. Seeing a tarpon track your fly, then engulfing the offering is something that will stick with you forever and will keep you coming back for more year after year. May and June dates book months out, seeing that tarpon lend themselves to being caught on fly. Crystal clean water makes this a sight fishermen’s dream
The summer and fall months are perfect for bones, baby tarpon and permit. A great time of year for the much pursued “Grand Slam”. The winds are low, the fish feed early in the first part of the day and fishing pressure is low.
Fly fishing is Captain Todd’s specialty and passion. If you are that hard core experienced fly fisherman, looking for someone with the same desires, Todd is the Captain for you. If you are that person who is new to the sport, you will benefit from Captain Todd’s calm demeanor, patience and teaching ability.
